Personal hygiene…

Filed under: Uncategorized — In the world but not of it @ 5:00 am

Our lives are a Christ-like fragrance rising up to God. But this fragrance is perceived differently by those who are being saved and by those who are perishing. To those who are perishing, we are a dreadful smell of death and doom. But to those who are being saved, we are a life-giving perfume. 2 Corinthians 2:15-16

Personal hygiene, or the lack of it, is quite important.

I don’t mean this disrespectfully, but there are people who don’t practice personal hygiene very well.

When you are seated next to someone on an airplane or in some close setting and have really no place to go then you will remember this devotional and will be sharing my experiences…

Having said that, there is another reason that a person may not want to sit next to someone or get too close even if they smell great. This, of course, is what Paul refers to in today’s passage, a Christ-like fragrance. To those who reject Christ, who you’ve been sharing with and have tried to reach…you may seem like an awful stench to them. They avoid you like the plague and spend as little time as necessary with you.

But there are those to whom you smell great. What you say and how you live is a soothing fragrance. It attracts them and they desire the living God in you. The truth is we will have both kinds of people in our lives.

But here is what we need to see…Christ in a surrendered life produces a fragrance that no man can create.

In the south of France you will find some of the world’s greatest perfumeries where you can take a tour and see how millions of flowers are pressed through machines to create just ounces of various scents. These scents are bottled and sit on a large table where one of the world’s few specialists sits. This person is a rare talent, one who can pick up scents in a single perform bottle and then creatively mix the right ones together to create new fragrances. His sense of smell is quite extraordinary.

But nothing he creates can match the fragrance that exudes from a changed and surrendered life. This fragrance is strictly reserved for Christ and it is distinct amongst His people…
