Keep your head down…

Filed under: Uncategorized — In the world but not of it @ 5:00 am

Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. For we are each responsible for our own conduct. Galatians 6:4-5

Years ago I read a story regarding employee satisfaction in America. The story was based on a survey conducted by an organization that went out and spoke to thousands of people across a multitude of industries and vocations to assess their views about their jobs.

When all was said and done it was reported that 80% of the people interviewed were discontent with the jobs they were in. Many people said that they had taken that particular job because it was available to them and they had financial needs. This same group also said that if given the choice there were other things that they would much rather be doing for a job and an income.

In our world today many people live in a state of discontentment. In fact, it is common to hear people say that in doing their job they just need to “keep their head down”… This is to somehow say that if you work in an environment that is stressful or not fulfilling that looking down and doing your job is the best way to get through it.

I don’t think anything could be further from the truth. The solution is not keeping our head down; it is keeping our head up and looking to the Father. As Christians, we need to come to terms that we are where God has us currently for a purpose. This does not preclude us from desiring something new, exploring new job opportunities or investigating new skills or areas.

But it does mean that until the Lord has something new for us then we need to keep our eyes on Him not be face down on our work. My responsibility is to perform my work as best as I can for the Lord and as today’s passage says, “I am responsible for my own conduct”.

Perhaps we place too much emphasis on our jobs and not enough on our Lord. I can’t tell you whether you should be working elsewhere or changing careers altogether but I can tell you that if you keep your head up and focused on Him and perform your job well then you will not only receive the satisfaction of a job well done but you will also be open to the leading of the Holy Spirit in your life to perhaps a new path.

Keeping your head down will more than likely result in you walking into a wall…look up!
