Too much…

Have you found honey? Eat only as much as you need, lest you be filled with it and vomit. Proverbs 25:16

One of my children recently started a nutrition program designed for kids that need to learn how to eat properly and at the same time lose some weight. During one of the classes I attended with them the instructors showed a series of slides on a projector regarding portions.

They discussed the popular foods we all love and showed what the recommended portions were twenty years ago and what they are today. The difference was astonishing. We have turned into a gluttonous culture that over-indulges on just about everything.

Did you know that the average size soda at McDonalds twenty years back was 6oz and today the average sold is 24oz? You can pretty much use that same formula across the board. Whatever was considered child size back then is not even half of what a small is today.

What is even more interesting is that after a month of eating all the foods my child normally eats but with the right portions they not only have lost some weight but they feel so much better and look so much healthier. In fact, when we have gone out over the last month and tried having a “treat” they actually didn’t feel very good at all and had to stop eating.

I saw a lesson in all of this. We can go for so long stuffing ourselves with the things of the world that we truly do become numb and ignorant to the effects it is having on us. It is only when our lives are captured by Christ and cleansed that we can actually look back and see the damaging effects and even more so, if we then try to once again engage in those things from the past we discover that we have lost our taste for them or that they simply can no longer satisfy.

Perhaps this is an obvious lesson and one we see so well but isn’t it worth remembering and examining the areas of our lives to see whether we are indeed indulging in too much honey?

Gluttony is not a secret vice…
