Repeated patterns…

Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching. Titus 2:7

Whether we are discussing being in the world or being in our churches, would you agree that the temptations to get us to compromise are increasing at an abnormal rate?

In fact, between what is on the TV and the magazine rack, the advertisements and billboards…it seems that the push to create in us a desire for self is ever-increasing and comes at us at an alarming rate.

The NKJV states this verse as “in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility”…

The terms “showing” and “pattern” are so important for us to understand. The word “showing” means to express towards someone and the word “pattern” means to strike something repeatedly without stopping. In other words living out our lives as disciples of Christ means that we are to live in such a way that we constantly express the Christ-like characteristics without stopping…there is no holiday from Christianity.

This means change and this is something that most people struggle with. If we have “patterns” of behavior in doing something that is not edifying or just pollutes us with worldly input then we are more than likely desensitized and may not see the true impact it is having.

To live out this command we must take a truthful yet painful stand in our lives and be willing to change the repeated behaviors, activities, conversations, etc…in exchange for repeated acts of integrity, reverence for the God we claim we serve and love so we may be incorruptible and unscathed.

For some this means minor treatment but for others it will be major surgery. One last point…

Do you remember Jim Heche? Jim was a man that the Lord used greatly. He and his family served alongside each other but in the 80’s Jim was one of the first people in New York to die from aids. It soon became known publicly and to the shock of his family, he had been living a gay lifestyle. This man who the Lord was obviously using was secretly living a completely different life.

Perhaps you’ve heard of Jim’s daughter, Anne Heche, the actress. Anne sang on the worship team once and served alongside her father.

His secret life of a repeated behavior permeated his entire family and eventually impacted an untold number along with it…
