Fill a need…

Filed under: Uncategorized — In the world but not of it @ 5:00 am

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed. Proverbs 31:8

In the Book of Job (chapter 29:7-17) there is a section where Job describes his former blessings and some of the duties he performed. He specifically articulates how he played a role in helping those that were less fortunate or did not have the wherewithal to help themselves.

I don’t believe it would take us long if we were to look around in our families, our place of work or even our church to realize that we are surrounded by people who need help. Sometimes we don’t want to get involved because we don’t want to make the commitment, be inconvenienced or get too close to a situation.

Years ago there was a profound “one-liner” in a kid’s animated movie. The phrase was “see a need, fill a need”…I don’t think this needs much explanation but in the context of our discussion I would only say that it is not our duty to replace the Holy Spirit working in the lives of others by meeting every need possible just because we can, however, it is equally not our place to ignore others or be selective in terms of who we help and when if the need is staring us in the face.

This is a delicate balance and emphasizes the need for us to be people of prayer with a keen awareness of what the Lord would have us to do. Sometimes we can rush in hastily believing we have the right solution but like Moses and the Egyptian (Exodus 2:11-12) we discover that wasn’t quite the right approach.

So what do we do, how do we know? I believe the answer lies in how we first live our own lives. The Bible tells is us in 2 Timothy 2:21 “If you keep yourself pure, you will be a special utensil for honorable use. Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for the Master to use you for every good work”.

This way I can know that I am ready to hear and see the leading of the Holy Spirit to respond where God leads me, to stand up for those that can’t stand for themselves, to be that anonymous giver, to be that shoulder, to simply listen without offering my opinion, to do whatever is needed to fill the need with the resources God has given me…
