It’s our choice…

“Look, today I am giving you the choice between a blessing and a curse! Deuteronomy 11:26

In July of 2008 Scientific American posted an article on how the brain operates like a muscle and when it is depleted it can become less effective. The article went on to discuss that each person has a mental trait called “executive function” and that this is where we flex our decision making ability in the brain.

The one very interesting point made throughout this article was that the ability to make a decision could be affected by earlier decisions we had to make which may be completely unrelated. For example, your ability to choose between two job offers could be affected by the food choices you made for the last week or month.

I’m not suggesting that I completely subscribe to this research and perhaps this sounds completely confusing and irrelevant, but let’s not miss the point that the researchers were trying to make. Simply stated, the way we make choices or even some of the choices we make have lingering effects on this area called “executive function” and when it comes time to make other choices, which may be more important, our ability to choose well can be affected by those lingering effects…

True or not true, it is not my place to say…I’m simply not that smart, but do you see the point, maybe?

The point is that our choices have lasting effects on us, mentally, spiritually and emotionally and eventually impact the ongoing choices we make. Therefore, if we are not choosing well to begin with then we are setting ourselves up for difficulty, stress, anxiety and other “not so good” results…

The Lord gives us clear instruction on what to do in order to experience a full and complete relationship with Him. He does not hold back or make exaggerated promises but rather is clear in His commands and simply wants us to know the blessing or curse that will result either way.

But if you refuse to serve the LORD, then choose today whom you will serve. Joshua 24:15

It’s our choice…
