Perseverance in prayer…

Filed under: Uncategorized — In the world but not of it @ 5:00 am

Finally the seventh time, his servant told him, “I saw a little cloud about the size of a man’s hand rising from the sea.” 1 Kings 18:44

James gives us insight into what Elijah was like…”Elijah was as human as we are, and yet when he prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none fell for three and a half years! Then, when he prayed again, the sky sent down rain and the earth began to yield its crops” (James 5:17-18).

Sometimes we forget that the heroes of faith we read about in the Bible were people just like us who had struggles and stress, discouragement and depression…yet when they kept their eyes on the Lord they saw wonderful things happen in and through their lives.

I love how this verse says “finally the seventh time” – in the Bible the number seven speaks of completion and it is almost as if the Lord wants to remind us to persevere in prayer, knowing that He will bring the answer and it will be to completion. He wants to build our faith, to look for the little clouds that form as a result of persevering in prayer.

Many years ago when my wife was pregnant with our first child, we both felt strongly that she should stop working and stay home once our child was born.

Financially it did not compute. I was not making enough for both of us and we had another financial commitment that the Lord had asked of us and it seemed overwhelming but we believed this was God’s will and so we prayed, and prayed and prayed…

I can still remember the scene/ My wife had called me on the way home from an appointment, discouraged with tears, wondering how or if the Lord would answer this prayer. I asked her what was more difficult for the Lord to do; to have her stay home and provide through me or to resolve this financial commitment we had. Without hesitation I told her that I was holding a letter that brought the resolution to that financial commitment…we both cried with tears of joy…

We had watched a little cloud grow into a remarkable answer before us. It is God’s way to build our faith, not to play hard to get or to stress us out. He wants us to persevere in prayer so that we may continue to grow up in Him…
