Automatically recalculating route…

Filed under: Uncategorized — In the world but not of it @ 5:00 am

And a great road will go through that once deserted land. It will be named the Highway of Holiness. Evil-minded people will never travel on it. It will be only for those who walk in God’s ways; fools will never walk there. Isaiah 35:8

Technology is a great thing, when it works…

In recent times my family and I had taken a long awaited holiday in Europe. It is something we had planned and looked forward to for many months. Although we spent time in a major city, we were really looking forward to spending time in the countryside to see rolling hills, ancient castles and really ancient villages.

As families do, we rented a car for our week in the country and I brought along a GPS device to help us navigate and stay on course since our agenda was quite full. Over the course of that week I came to truly appreciate the wonder of this technology. Driving through the countryside is more complex than trying to get through a maze. There are so many small streets, nooks and crannies that without the GPS you would simply never even consider turning into or onto any of these dark and dreary roads.

Yet we were amazed at not only how efficient this device was in getting us to all our destinations but also that, because of it, we discovered places that were never even on our list of things to see. Some of these places were simply amazing sights and made the whole trip rich and full of enjoyment for us.

And at the end of the day we had the confidence to turn on any road, knowing that our little device would display the comforting words “automatically recalculating route”…you see, it knows that we have an ultimate destination but it also anticipates and somehow expects that we may take some other roads to get there so it sits happily waiting to direct our path.

As we walk on the Highway of Holiness we have this same assurance that the Holy Spirit will guide us, protect us along the way when the road seems dark and unfamiliar. It is a promise for us as children of God that gives us great comfort and hope…
