Follow the pattern…

“Be sure that you make everything according to the pattern I have shown you”…Exodus 25:40

I’ve heard many people say that they find certain parts of the Bible difficult or even boring to read, especially the ones that describe in painstaking detail how the temple and the Ark of the Covenant were to be built.

Over the years I have come to appreciate these portions of scripture in a way I did not imagine. I began to see just how much God is into proper planning and instruction. God is into patterns, design and architecture. He wants things done a certain way for certain reasons. Our own lives are carefully woven together into the pattern He has designed for us.

One year my son got some Lego sets he wanted as a gift. We committed to build these sets together and got started by sitting on the floor, laying out the pieces and keeping the instruction manual open before us. It was a great time and we had fun hanging out together and watching these sets come alive. Except there was one problem; when we got to the end of the 55 page manual on the largest set, we realized that we had made a mistake.

We could not find the piece we were told to use and discovered that we had used it in the wrong way several pages back. Yes, we had to deconstruct nearly the whole set to get back to that piece and start from there again.

It taught us the lesson of how important following a pattern really is. Even though we could have finished it from where we were it would not have been really complete and we would know it…we simply would not settle for an “almost finished” project.

If you are working through some type of pattern in your life right now, a marriage, a career or something else the Lord has in your life, remember there is a pattern, a set of steps, a process to follow. Our God does everything in and with order…
