Ear, thumb and toe…

Filed under: Uncategorized — In the world but not of it @ 5:00 am

“apply some of its blood to the right earlobes of Aaron and his sons. Also put it on the thumbs of their right hands and the big toes of their right feet”. Exodus 29:20

Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins (Hebrews 9:14).

The significance of Aaron and his sons placing some of the blood on their ear, thumb and toe should not be missed. As they performed the ceremony this was one way in which they symbolically and outwardly stated that they were cleansed by the shed blood from whatever they had heard, touched or walked in that may have defiled them.

At times we all do this. We listen to something or someone that we shouldn’t, we partake of something that is not edifying and tears us down and we are also prone to walking into situations that can really damage us spiritually.

This act performed by Aaron and his sons was meant as a constant reminder that it is only through the work God has done that forgiveness and right standing with God can come. This too is what we find in the New Testament as our Lamb, Jesus Christ, was sacrificed once for all so that we may find forgiveness for our sins and be cleansed from the things that defile us.

But let us point out one other aspect of this act. It was also to signify the responsibility that a believer has before God.

By placing some of the blood on the ear lobe the priest was stating that his dedication must be to the hearing of the word of God.

By placing some of the blood on his thumb the priest was stating his hands must be diligent in fulfilling the ministry or work God had given him.

By placing some of the blood on his toe the priest was stating that he was to walk in the way God had set before him, to stay on the path.

So too, as believers we are to stay close to the Lord and hear Him through His word, we are to remain diligent in running the race and performing the tasks at hand and we are to continuously walk in the way God has set before us so that our actions and conduct glorify Him.
