Oh no, not the bumps…

So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you have to endure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. 1 Peter 1:6-7

One of our most memorable family vacations involved an opportunity to stay at a really nice place and enjoy some wonderful family time. This was a few years back when my children were very young.

We had rented a minivan for that week and each time we came in and out of the hotel property we had to go over these enormous speed bumps. These weren’t your usual speed bumps that protruded slightly out of the pavement. These things looked like mini volcanoes ready to erupt. They were quite funny and one afternoon I decided that driving over them slowly was no longer an option.

So, I pressed hard on the accelerator and we began driving over them at a relatively steady speed. Each time we saw them coming we would all yell out “Oh no, not the bumps”!

Guess you had to be there…it was quite funny…

Nevertheless, I was reminded of this story the other day and I thought about how much it is really similar to our Christian experience. God’s word tells us that we will experience trials (John 16:33) and even later in 1 Peter, he reminds us again by saying

“Dear friends, don’t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you. Instead, be very glad—for these trials make you partners with Christ in his suffering, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world”. 1 Peter 4:12-13

God told us these things in advance so that we would prepare and be strengthened. In effect, we also see the bumps coming many times in our lives but instead of “rejoicing” or being “truly glad”, we hit the panic button.

I’m not suggesting that we need to put on a happy face over every trial in life. God is not asking us to have no feeling or emotion – He is asking us to have perspective, in other words it is a decision, a choice we must make in how we respond to the bumps.

Full speed ahead…
