Good advice vs. Godly counsel…

The godly offer good counsel…Psalms 37:30

By far, one of the most difficult things to learn both in life and in our walk with God is how to discern God’s voice in our life especially over matters of importance.

Notice that the good counsel is offered by those that are godly and in the next verse the Psalmist is more specific when he says “They have made God’s law their own, so they will never slip from his path” (Psalms 37:31).

We all want advice, input and feedback from others but there is an added step we often miss and that is to then take all the counsel we receive and go to our prayer closet. You probably receive mountains of junk mail each week in your mailbox. I don’t know how these companies get my name but as a family we get mail of all kinds sent to our home and it takes a few minutes each day to sort it, separating the good from the bad…

Counsel is a bit like mail, as a person you get lots of it. Then you need to spend time sorting it out and determining what is useful and what needs to go into the shredder. In fact, God encourages us to seek it as well. Proverbs 11:14 says “in the multitude of counselors there is safety”. This means that when we have important decisions to make or really need direction from the Lord, we should seek out the counsel of others that may have specific knowledge of the topic or situation concerning us.

However, the direction we seek, the answers we need, can only come from the Lord. Often people’s good counsel is not God’s counsel, therefore we must trust only the Lord to ultimately confirm what we need to know and do.

So what is the most practical way to approach this? Depending on what we need counsel for, it is wisdom to search out information and knowledge about the matter…again as we just read in Proverbs 11:14…and if there is someone in your life who you know is walking with the Lord and will give you the truth then having a conversation with them is practical wisdom. Either way, our main action must always be to then take the matter to God for His counsel is the one we want…

The LORD directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Psalms 37:23
