Life lessons…

Filed under: Uncategorized — In the world but not of it @ 5:00 am

The LORD makes some poor and others rich; he brings some down and lifts others up. He lifts the poor from the dust and the needy from the garbage dump. He sets them among princes, placing them in seats of honor. For all the earth is the LORD’s, and he has set the world in order. 1 Samuel 2:7-8

That job was mine. I knew it and everyone else knew it. I had earned the right to that promotion. I was the most qualified candidate and had demonstrated this to be true over and over again.

The day arrived when the promotions were announced and my name was nowhere to be found.

God has very specific lessons that He needs to teach to each of His children. You have a particular area in your life that the Lord must penetrate and sort out.

These are often referred to as life lessons. There are some lessons that are simply necessary to learn in order to live a life that is pleasing to Him but there are others that transform your way of thinking completely and go a long way in shaping you.

This was one of those. I needed to learn that nothing in me or about me qualifies me for anything in this world apart from the Lord’s desire to fulfill His greater purpose in my life. This is difficult to accept since the world’s thinking is in direct opposition to God’s way of doing things.

The world teaches that talent, skill and learning should bring a certain result. In many ways they do and God does not discount that in a person’s life. However, God may desire to use us in ways that are contrary to what we think we should be doing and often He needs to loosen our tight grip on life in order to get us to move in His direction.

Suddenly Jesus’ words in John 15:5 came to life…”For apart from me you can do nothing”.

This is something we really need to learn and live like we believe – that God’s purpose and plan for us supersedes all the other “things” we want and do. We may still receive all the desires of our heart as we walk with Him, we may still experience great blessings but the point is slightly different – it is to say that my heart and mind need to echo the words of John the Baptist…

“He must increase, but I must decrease” John 3:30
