Give freely…

Give freely and become more wealthy; be stingy and lose everything. Proverbs 11:24

Before a person can give freely they first have to have the right perspective about time, talent and treasure.

People who give freely typically understand that the money or material possessions they own can only satisfy so much. This is why you will find many people, who are not necessarily Christians, willing to give.

We have a tendency to think of the money and possessions we own as ours. Aren’t they ours? I suppose it is the difference between seeing all we have as a gift from God to be a good steward over vs. we worked really hard to earn it and no one will tell me how to use or spend it.

For the Christian the issue is understanding Who provides it to begin with. James tells us that “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights” James 1:17.

God is not broke; His economic status is never impacted or affected by ours or the world we live in. He never runs out of resources therefore when we hoard what He actually has provided we are in effect refusing to honor Him.

Giving freely to become more wealthy is not a guarantee either. God is not suggesting that we go and give everything away and then sit and wait for some enormous check to arrive in the mail. The principle is one that He has instilled in life, that if we give freely in all areas of our lives, we too will experience a reciprocal blessing. It may not always be monetary, in fact it may never be monetary but there will certainly be several others ways in which we will be wealthy; spiritually, emotionally, relationally…

The same applies when we don’t give – we remove the potential blessings that could be ours and we separate ourselves from the opportunity to experience the joy of giving and playing a part in something bigger than just ourselves…

He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Romans 8:32
