Don’t forget to remember…

“But that is the time to be careful! Beware that in your plenty you do not forget the LORD your God”…Deuteronomy 8:11

Over the years I have had frequent conversations with people in various countries who expressed a great desire to come to the United States.

These same people would criticize the politics of the United States and some of the decisions made that impacted their relationship with other countries around the globe but when it came to a personal discussion about where they would want to live or spend most of their time the answer was inevitably the USA.

There were a set of common phrases I would hear from people when they described this desire to come to the US, phrases like “it is the land of opportunity”, “it is a place of freedom”, “the US is filled with diversity and culture”…and many other similar phrases.

Despite the problems in our world today many still have this view of the US but what is more interesting is that the people in the US don’t have a better explanation for why they live here either. As a country, we have systematically forgotten our roots, we have neglected to acknowledge the reasons why this wonderful country enjoys the status and reputation it has.

In our plenty we forgot God. We forgot the reasons why we invested, why we sacrificed, why we made the effort to fight for the freedoms we enjoy. Today ask any adult you see what the main themes of the constitution are and you will get either no response or some partial reply that is missing the main points.

The reason God gives us warnings like this one in Deuteronomy is because He knows our nature and tendency to forgot, to neglect, to ignore…He knows this about us and we have proven Him right too many times as a country and in our personal lives…
