He is not the man upstairs…

Filed under: Uncategorized — In the world but not of it @ 5:00 am

O LORD my God, how great you are! Psalm 104:1

So often you will hear people refer to God as the man upstairs, or as their co-pilot or some other term that really misses the mark of who God is. Is it possible that some of us struggle in our walk with the Lord due to the fact that we really don’t know Him or rather just how awesome He really is?

God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through? Numbers 23:19

Let’s call out three important facets of our God and let us also consider what the scriptures have to say.

Omnipresent

This word refers to being present everywhere at the same time as in the omnipresent God. Look at what David wrote in Psalm 139…

I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me and your strength will support me. I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night, but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you. Psalm 139:7-12

There is nowhere we can go where God is not…

Omniscient

This word speaks of infinite knowledge. Have you ever considered what it must be like to know everything! People thrive and relish regarding their education and degrees yet ask the next PhD you meet whether they know what the baseball score will be for tomorrow’s game or what the temperature will be tonight at midnight in their town. Isaiah’s words speak volumes…

Who is able to advise the Spirit of the LORD? Who knows enough to give him advice or teach him? Has the LORD ever needed anyone’s advice? Does he need instruction about what is good? Did someone teach him what is right or show him the path of justice? Isaiah 40:13-14

The Apostle Paul makes it a bit more practical for us…

Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways! For who can know the LORD’s thoughts? Who knows enough to give him advice? Romans 11:33-34

Omnipotent

This words refers to having unlimited authority and power something that belongs to God exclusively and not to your boss, your pastor, you spouse, your president or prime minister. Only God is bestowed with this greatness. Again listen to the words of Isaiah…

Who else has held the oceans in his hand? Who has measured off the heavens with his fingers? Who else knows the weight of the earth or has weighed the mountains and hills on a scale? No, for all the nations of the world are but a drop in the bucket. They are nothing more than dust on the scales. He picks up the whole earth as though it were a grain of sand. All the wood in Lebanon’s forests and all Lebanon’s animals would not be enough to make a burnt offering worthy of our God. The nations of the world are worth nothing to him. In his eyes they count for less than nothing, mere emptiness and froth. Isaiah 40:12, 15-17

What is your burden today that this God cannot attend to? How awesome is He…
