Forgetting to remember…

I have calmed and quieted myself…Psalm 131:2

We often forget to take time to remember.

Prosperity, blessing and success have the tendency to work like Novocain at times, where the need to go deeper with God and stay close to Him is numbed by the false sense of security that comes from putting our emphasis too greatly on the blessings themselves.

I recently watched a television program where successful multi-millionaires in agreed to give up their life for one week and go to another part of the country disguised as a television crew filming a documentary on areas that were considered the slums of some of the country’s largest cities. The volunteer millionaire’s role was to get involved in community work and help the less fortunate.

They had to live in an apartment that was in the area. They had to shop, do laundry and perform all their normal daily tasks like everyone else. This one volunteer, a very wealthy real estate magnate was shocked by the living accommodations and how the people basically lived in that area. He volunteered at the local Boy’s club and some of the food pantries and also one of the shelter organizations that went to the homes of those that could not get around by themselves.

By the middle of the week this grown man was in his apartment crying and beaten down by what he had experienced. His wife had sent him a package containing his mail that included a recent magazine subscription relating to yachts. He broke down in tears as he stared at the cover of this magazine showing a yacht worth several million dollars. Only a few days earlier he would have considered buying this but now he was discussing the cost of this boat and what that same amount of money could do for the people he was now living amongst.

He was crying not only because of the conditions that these people were exposed to, which represent a large part of the population, but also because he was recalling his childhood and how hard his father had worked to provide for them.

In other words, he was starting to remember where he came from.

I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. Philippians 3:7
