You know what I am really like…

“Do whatever you have in mind, for God is with you.” 1 Chronicles 17:2

Later in this chapter as David gave thanks to the Lord for speaking to him through the prophet Nathan, he says “You know what your servant is really like. For the sake of your servant, O LORD, and according to your will, you have done all these great things and have made them known”(1 Chronicles 17:18-19).

When we read passages like verse two we can forget that the men and women in the Bible were just like us. They too had struggles, moral deficiencies, ethical challenges, relational problems, bad habits, and more.

That is why reading further down we should be encouraged by David’s statement “you know what your servant is really like”…

God does know what we are really like. We won’t shock him with our thought life or the stupid things we do here and there. Yet, because we know that He knows us so well we are prone to believing that we can’t move forward in our faith or that He is not with us.

This is why knowing God’s word and living like we believe it makes all the difference. We find the answer to this dilemma in Romans.

Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory. Romans 5:1-2

It is through God’s grace (undeserved privilege) that we live this life in Him and in return He extends the grace even more by wanting us to be bold in our requests, confident in our conversation and forward looking in our faith.

Again, look at the other statement by David in his thanksgiving prayer to God…

And now, O God, in addition to everything else, you speak of giving your servant a lasting dynasty! You speak as though I were someone very great, O LORD God! 1 Chronicles 17:17

As if you haven’t done enough for me Lord…
