He showed up…

“and this time Thomas was with them”… John 20:26

Eight days had passed since the last visit Jesus made to the disciples. In His last visit Thomas was not present and communicated that he did not believe the report.

This time “Thomas was with them” and saw Jesus with his own eyes and touched him with his own hands.

I want to emphasize here that I don’t believe Thomas had unbelief the prior week. I believe he doubted instead. There is a vast difference between the two.

Unbelief has resolved that there is simply no way, while doubt struggles to see the way.

Thomas doubted and this is evident in the fact that eight days later he showed up. Jesus shows up also and goes right to Thomas.

The Lord, knowing Thomas’ heart, went right to the source of the doubt and dealt with it openly and lovingly and Thomas replied by saying the only thing possible to say when you have touched God and He has revealed Himself to you…”My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28)

Faith is believing what we do not see, and the reward for this kind of faith is to see what we believe. Saint Augustine
