He’ll handle it…

Filed under: Uncategorized — In the world but not of it @ 5:00 am

Don’t say, “I will get even for this wrong.” Wait for the LORD to handle the matter. Proverbs 20:22

In this one passage we find the remedy and the instruction for handling a situation we see as wrong whether it is against us or someone else. Here is the same teaching in the New Testament

Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable. Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone. Romans 12:17-18

Our society tells us that it is right to defend our rights, that we must stand and be counted and that “payback” is an expected result in dire situations. We make movies on the topic, it is the central theme found in many novels and books, and revenge draws a crowd and seems to satisfy the deepest thoughts and intents of our hearts when we see it.

We love to see the bad guy get what is coming to him especially when it involves really delicate topics.

But as it relates to our everyday lives, the principle of waiting on the Lord to handle the matter is invaluable to us. Trying to manage the wrongs done against us or others is not prudent or practical.

First, we don’t have all the facts and knowledge of the situation, although often we think we do. We also cannot possibly extinguish every little flame that springs up. In fact, many who seek to ensure that they cover all the bases in protecting themselves, their rights or those of others end up exhausted and defeated both physically and spiritually and eventually are useless to themselves and the others they wanted to protect.

Of course, these are general comments and there are times when we must confront, defend and speak up but even then the principle taught to us in scripture is to have an attitude of waiting on the Lord. This involves prayer and then it involves the discipline of listening to God’s instructions in our lives.

More is accomplished when God is involved. Things get resolved in ways with the Lord leading that cannot be fully addressed when we take the matter into our own hands.

Whatever it is today, bring it to the One who knows all the details and can address it…
