In the world but not of it

“I am the LORD, and I do not change” Malachi 3:6

Recently I spent time with friends discussing the inconsistencies of life, mainly in the hospitality industry since we had all traveled together and collected a number of good stories about the lack of customer service and the lack of consistency.

We traveled to a few cities but tried staying in the same hotel chain. Each one had different ways of doing the same thing; each one did one thing better or worse than the next. When we expected one particular benefit we were told it was not available but then found it more than available at the next place we went.

Consistency is the reason we go to our favorite restaurant, or our favorite stores to shop. It is something that we take for granted less and less these days. In doing a character study on God you will come across this attribute quite quickly. This is the basis for our passage and several others in scripture that discuss the same character trait of God that He simply does not change and He is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8).

But as much as consistency is a positive and welcome character trait it can also be quite the opposite when it refers to the effect of sin or the description of our enemy, Satan. In fact, in speaking of the enemy Jesus said “When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies” John 8:44

Consistency is something we too should desire in our lives for good and godly reasons. People who know us should have no question about the consistency of our character in keeping our word, being truthful and honest, reliable and so on.

When it comes to God I don’t ever need to be let down that He will change on a whim, or become emotional or disconnected. He will perform what He has promised.

When those that are closest to us fail us, when the job doesn’t work out, when our health fails, when the things we falsely put our hope in change, God will still be there, the same as ever…
