Airport security…

Filed under: Uncategorized — In the world but not of it @ 5:00 am

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me”. John 14:6

There are few places in the world where people watching is as interesting as it is in an airport. Think about it, people from all nations and backgrounds congregate in one building only to leave again for their final destination.

Thousands upon thousands of people enter a terminal building each day, go through the same process and eventually board a plane for another airport. This process they go through involves checking in with their airline, exchanging documents, being screened through security, getting to a gate, waiting and eventually boarding the plane to leave.

It is the security screening part that fascinates me.

There are large signs all along the security line that have pictures telling you what to do before you go through security. There are televisions at times or people walking around shouting out instructions clearly. Yet with all this information there are some who simply pay no attention.

Recently I watched a person try to walk through the security screening with their bags in hand as opposed to having put them on the belt. They looked dumbfounded when asked what they were doing. They tried again, this time with things in their pockets they forgot to take out. This person held up the line for about 5 minutes. Waiting in a long line for 5 minutes and not moving because one person is not cooperating can be a bit difficult. We’ll leave it at that…

But the main point here is that no one enters unless they go through security and unless they do it by following the specific instructions required. By now you see where I am going with our text and this example. There are many who think that getting into heaven is simply a matter of doing things their own way.

They’ve heard the gospel and understood the premise for entering into eternity yet they choose to try and go through by their standards or devices. Some people, like the person I mentioned at the airport, believe they can do “just enough” to get through but It just won’t work.

Jesus made the way clear, He is the Way and He is the shepherd of the sheep. He said plainly “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep”. John 10:6

The Bible has clear instructions and warning signs for the road to eternity. It is filled with instructions about what we are to do, how we are to live, what we must watch out for. All this is in preparation for eternity. You can’t sneak through security at the airport and no one will be able to sneak their way into eternity. It is only because of Jesus that we enter.

“Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures”. John 10:9
