Honey, I shrunk the Lord…

Filed under: Uncategorized — In the world but not of it @ 5:00 am

“I know that you can do anything, and no one can stop you. You asked, ‘Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorance?’ It is I—and I was talking about things I knew nothing about, things far too wonderful for me”. Job 42:2-3

Here in the final chapter of this amazing story, Job responds to a series of examples the Lord has given him to make it very clear and obvious that people really can’t fully understand God.

The title of today’s entry is a play on the title of a film made a few years back where an inventor accidently shrunk his children. When we invent ways of managing our lives or living out God’s word in a way that may not be as it was instructed then we too are guilty of doing the same to the Lord, shrinking Him or reducing Him to a mere man or to a pill or some substance that we believe will take away our problems or help us deal with life better.

Think about this for moment. We often run to people rather than to God. Some will pour, smoke, swallow or even snort something in an effort to feel better or escape their reality. People have lots of ways of soothing their issues and pains and the irony is that they still believe they are in control even when that thing they are doing has taken complete control of them.

Yes, we are all guilty of shrinking the Lord in our lives, of reducing Him next to nothing. The second part of this passage is exactly the place we need to come to today, not tomorrow, not next week. We need to acknowledge that we don’t know what we are talking about, that the things of God really are too wonderful for us. Yet because of this we can have certainty and assurance in our lives that He can give us victory. In fact, He has already given us the victory and we need to now grasp it and hold it firmly. He is the victory!

The power of God in our lives is a direct measure of how big or how small we make Him out to be. See Him for who He is not what you want Him to be…
